Sustainability Key FAQs
What is the Sustainability Key?

The Sustainability Key, created by Fluid, is a way of grading our products against sustainable criteria, so you can see quickly and easily what eco-credentials your merchandise has.

Why did we create the Sustainability Key?

We created the Sustainability Key to help you make sustainable choices more easily.

By having the Sustainability Key stickers on each product, you can see how these products have earned their sustainability credentials - making it easier and quicker for you to make the best decisions for your brand.

How does the Sustainability Key work?

We’ve been tirelessly vetting every product, putting them through vigorous testing procedures against our sustainability metrics.

If the product is deemed sustainable in line with the Green Claims Code and Green Claims Directive, they’ll earn themselves a sticker of achievement.

These stickers will then appear on the product listing, so you can be sure how and why your product is sustainable.

Are you on a journey to Net Zero?

Great, so are we! Our Sustainability Key will help you select carefully considered merchandise with a carbon footprint that can be included in your carbon reporting. Did you know, we plant a tree with every order, too?

We’ve made it personal!

In the same way that we all use food labelling in the supermarket for our individual tastes and diets, different customers value different sustainability credentials. So, rather than simply giving the product an ‘eco-stamp’, we’ve made it more granular, with over 25 credentials to inform your choice - helping you make the right choice for your individual requirements.

What products does the Sustainability Key apply to?

Thanks to our Sustainability Key, we’ve been able to curate a whole new range of products that go above and beyond the basic levels of sustainability in our new sustainability brochure.

The key has also been applied to the most sustainable products on our website, so you can make more informed decisions on what works best for your sustainability goals and marketing campaigns.

What areas does the Sustainability Key focus on?
1. Material composition

Material composition: Is the product made from a single material (hello, easy recycling!) or a mix of many? The simpler, the better when it comes to end-of-life disposal.

2. Country of origin

Country of origin:  Where was the product made, nearby or far away? Local sourcing means a lighter carbon footprint. Bonus points if the product is UK-made.

3. Production waste

Production waste: Does it give a second life to pre-/post-consumer waste like discarded water bottles or offcuts? That’s innovation we love.

4. Biodegradability & Compostability

Biodegradability & Compostability: Will the product naturally return to the earth? That means less harm and more harmony with nature.

5. Recyclability (UK & EU)

Recyclability: Can the product be recycled (UK & EU)? This means that when it comes to the end of its life, it can be used to create new products, meaning less waste.

6. Recycled content

Recycled content: Is the product made using recycled materials? That’s a win. Reusing what already exists helps reduce demand for virgin resources.

7. Life-span

Life-span: How long will it last? Can it be refilled, reused or repurposed? Think meaningful merch, not single-use plastic.

8. Transport

Transport: Was it shipped by air or sea? Air freight = high emissions. Rail and sea = greener paths.

9. Packaging

Packaging: Is the packaging minimal, recyclable or reusable? Sustainable inside and out.

10. Accreditations

Accreditations: We look for trustworthy standards like FSC, ISO, GOTS, along with Sedex, to back up the ESG claims.

11. Renewable energy

Renewable energy: Is the product made in factories powered by renewables? We champion cleaner energy at every stage.

12. SDG Alignment

SDG Alignment: Does the product or maker support the UN Sustainable Development Goals? That’s the bigger picture we’re working toward.

MONO-MATERIAL: A mono-material product is composed of only a single type of material. Zips, buckles, etc., are not included.

TRANSPORT: The product has been transported using either road, sea or rail.

B CORP: B Corp Certification verifies that a business is meeting high standards of performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.

BIODEGRADABLE: This product can be broken down naturally, with at least 60% of it breaking down in the ecosystem.

CARBON FOOTPRINT: Carbon footprints measure the total greenhouse gas emissions generated by a product.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY: Is an economic system based on the reuse and regeneration of materials or products, especially as a means of continuing production in a sustainable or environmentally friendly way.

COMPOSTABLE: This product has been made with materials that have been certified to break down completely into non-toxic components (water, carbon dioxide and biomass) and will not harm the environment.

DOUBLE DONATION: This product has donated twice. Firstly, it’s had a tree planted, and secondly, it’s either given back to charity, the community, or by planting another tree.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT: This is where a company empowers people with few resources through education, employment, health services, and gives them a sense of identity and community in which they can thrive and grow.

ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONS: This monitors and helps improve the environmental status of the product. They are renewed annually to make sure the product is still meeting the standards.

ENVIRONMENTAL PACKAGING: Environmental packaging creates less of a negative impact on the environment with regard to manufacturing, production, shipping and disposal or recycling.
